In this video, Erin explains how our innate and natural protective mechanism, designed to keep us safe, can become a runaway train that inappropriately takes over our nervous system, signaling danger when no danger is present.

  • People who live with constant anxiety can have a difficult time feeling good.

  • People with nervous systems on high alert most/or all of the time find it challenging to relax.

  • People who run anxiety patterns tend to stay busy, rarely rest, and often move from one thing to the next quickly.


Anxiety can be caused by the inability to shed, remove, or “digest” the energy produced as part of a fight, flight or freeze responses. Wild animals will release survival energy; they pant, shake, run, etc., when a threat has passed. This innate and fundamental built-in mechanism protects Zebras and other prey from lions, tigers, and bears because they have the survival instinct to flee. After fleeing, when they are safe, they release any extra survival energy from their system, which returns them to a state of balance, or homeostasis, also called “regulation.”

Humans with stuck or unreleased survival energy are often out of balance and to the point of overload, so we respond to everything in our environment as if it’s dangerous. We lose the ability to distinguish between what’s dangerous and what’s not, and we feel like danger is around every corner, so we are ready to freeze, flee, or fight at all times. This is particularly true if we’ve experienced trauma or some kind of extreme danger at any point in our lives but did release the survival energy resulting from trauma.

Our nervous systems can become so accustomed to stuck survival energy that we become “comfortable with being uncomfortable.” We reach the point where we feel best when our bodies constantly look for danger because it has become our new normal. And we’ve lost the ability to distinguish between a hungry lion, an angry boss, or an agitated child; everything feels threatening and makes us anxious.

These patterns can become so ingrained that we become consumed by anxiety — it rules our lives. Being anxious becomes our normal and even our preferred way of being.

  • If you easily disassociate from situations or your body by staying in your mind. And this technique helps you not feel things.

  • If ideas loop in your head and they become compulsive thoughts and feelings.

  • If you worry constantly.
