Safe distance
The truck passed me and then pulled in quickly enough that I needed to hit my brakes.
“Jerk” I said under my breath as I changed lanes to get away from the vehicle that seemed to be doing the same thing to everyone. I wanted to keep a safe distance from him because I didn’t think that the way that he was driving was safe and I wanted to keep a safe distance from him.
“Why did that guy pull in so quickly after he passed you?” my son asked.
“I don’t know baby” I said back.
“You should have done it back” he said as he stared out the window.
“Why on earth would I do that?” I asked with genuine curiosity of what he would say.
“Well, because he did it to you and he should know what it feels like” he said.
“Is that the way that you like to learn things?” I asked gently.
“No” he said quietly.
Multiple minutes went by as we were sitting in silence. Eventually, he spoke again.
“Do you think that he had a bad day? Or, maybe he is mad about something and doesn’t even realize that he is being aggressive. Or maybe his mom never taught him to be nice” he said.
I looked over at him and caught his eyes. As we locked eyes for a moment I smiled at him.
