Clean feet and sheets
My life is full and beautiful. It is filled with people whom I adore and animals and gardening and nature. As a result, it doesn’t seem to matter how many times I sweep and mop the floor, there are bits of the fullness of my life that can be found spread around the floor. I walk through life barefoot almost every day, and my feet collect small bits of my life as I move through the day.
Each night when I climb into bed, I brush the dirt from my feet before I slide between the clean sheets. There is something magickal for me about sleeping in clean sheets, it is one of the small things that I enjoy so deeply. I have a fairly rigid schedule for how often I wash my sheets, not because of fear but from a place of love. From a place of self-love because it is a gift that I give to myself. It is a small pleasure in life that I GET to give myself. It doesn’t really matter how often I wash my sheets, but I want to wash them frequently because I adore the way that it feels. There is something about sliding into clean sheets that allows me to let down and sink into the sensation of the sheets against my bare skin.
Last night, as I dusted off my day from my feet I got thinking about what a beautiful metaphor it was. Sometimes, we climb into bed with dirty feet from our day and we get our clean sheets dirty with experiences that we have had. Sometimes, the bed is our next relationship. Sometimes, the bed is our next job. Sometimes, the bed is our next chapter in life. Sometimes, if we don’t take the time to brush away the dirt that we have acquired from moving through our lives, we are just spreading it into our next experience. Maybe taking the time to brush the dirt from life off our feet will result in a better night's sleep for our next journey in life.
